Blast Furnaces - Work by CRC on the Shaft lining

In the Tata Steel design Blast furnaces (BF) advanced refractory linings are applied. For example the BF shaft comprises of a lining with an outstanding performance of more than 20 years service life. This lining is developed during the last 25 years within the company and with an important role of CRC.

  • Thermal calculations, prediction of wear lines and demonstrating the effects of improved cooling designs
  • Development of CO resistant graphite in close co-operation with the manufacturer
  • Research on potassium attack on graphite and Carbon
  • Testing and selection of slag and alkali resistant SiC
  • Testing the abrasion resistance of BF refractories
  • Selection of high thermal conductivity ramming mass and testing of an optimal application method
  • Research on thermal shock resistance and lining layout
  • Development of refractory mortars and glues
As a result the Shaft lining of BF#7 in IJmuiden originating from 1991 is qualified for a second BF campaign without repair. This is unprecedented in the world.
